Methodology & Honest Limits

What this is: a mathematical extrapolation, not a live feed. No global real-time reporting system for abortion exists. This clock takes the most widely cited annual estimate — 73 million induced abortions per year (Bearak et al., The Lancet Global Health, 2020; Guttmacher Institute & WHO) — and distributes it evenly across every second of the year, counting forward from the start of each interval in your local time.

What it is not: a precise tally. The underlying estimate is a statistical model built from incomplete country data; actual occurrence is not uniform by hour, day, or season. Treat every number here as an approximation of scale, accurate to the anchor rate, not to the individual event.

*Since-2000 figure: applies the current 73M/yr rate retroactively for illustration. Actual historical estimates were lower in earlier periods (≈56M/yr in 2010–2014; ≈50M/yr in 1990–1994, per Guttmacher), so the true cumulative figure since 2000 is somewhat lower than shown.
